Family Learning Night

Altoona Children's Council sponsors Family Learning Night every year to encourage family sharing and learning as an extension of the education process.  Although the theme and activities change each time this event happens, families are always invited to enjoy a free meal and each child in attendance receives a free book to take home!

Back to School Ice Cream Social

The Ice Cream Social is generally held the evening before the first day of school at Altoona's 10th Street Park from 5:30-7:00 p.m.  The entire community is invited to enjoy ice cream cones as a celebration of the upcoming start of a new school year. Contributing to the festivities are the Altoona High School Band, the Altoona Police & Fire Department, and a variety of local family-friendly non-profit organizations.  In addition, an Altoona school bus and driver are always on hand for "tours" and last minute questions.  Guest scoopers include: school district administration and board members, city administration and council members, members of the fire/police departments and administration from St. Mary's Catholic School.
