New Regulations:

THE HEALTHY HUNGER-FREE KIDS ACT (HHFKA) was signed into law on December 13, 2010.  Part of the HHFKA requires USDA to revise school nutrition standards to be consistent with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.  USDA is currently working on the revision.  New regulations we foresee coming from the changes include: 1. The federal government is working toward setting a price across the nation for meals.  Altoona will make the first increase by $0.05 for elementary lunch only for the 2011-12 school year.  2. The wellness committee will review the new guidelines (when they are made available by USDA) regarding fundraising and snacks brought into school. 3. Breakfast and lunch meals will increase whole grain options, offer more fresh fruits and vegetables, and provide lower sodium and fat content in foods. Altoona Foodservice will continue to make changes as USDA provides us with the new regulations.

Free and reduced meal applications can be submitted anytime during the school year.  If your income changes at anytime during the year you can apply for free or reduced meals.  If you applied and your income changes you may reapply. Physician Order for Diet Modification Form

Meal Information:

The School District of Altoona participates in the National School Lunch Program [NSL]. Lunches served must meet nutritional guidelines established by the U.S.D.A. Lunches are designed to meet one-third (1/3) and Breakfasts are designed to meet one-quarter (1/4) of the Recommended Dietary Allowances [RDA] for key nutrients and energy. Menus are also planned to meet the most current U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In addition, a variety of ala carte food items will be available at the middle and high Schools. The ala carte programs are cash only.

If your child has been determined by a doctor to be handicapped and the handicap would prevent the child from eating a regular school meal, the school will make substitutions prescribed by the doctor. An effort will also be made to accommodate medically necessary dietary modifications for non-handicapped children. If you believe your child needs a modified diet, please contact Peggy Ehrhard, Food and Nutrition Supervisor. The phone number is 839-6056.

Morning Milk Break:

Morning Milk Break is $34.40 per student per semester for grades K-5.  Please full payment only.  First semester payment is due September 3, 2010.  Milk break starts on Tuesday September 7, 2010.
Second semester milk break money ($34.30) is due on Friday January 21, 2011.  second semester milk break starts on Tuesday January 25, 2011.

Payment Procedures:

The Food Service Program uses a computerized meal system that requires parents [guardians] to PREPAY money into a family account. Each family participating in the breakfast and/or lunch programs or purchasing only milk should send a check to cover a minimum of two weeks. This money is placed in the family account and as each child charges a meal or milk, the computer deducts the price from the family’s account (similar to having a meal checking account). Family accounts will be checked daily and a family will be notified when the account is +$8.00 or less.

A copy of a food service statement is enclosed explaining how to read the statement. IT IS IMPERATIVE that upon receiving the billing, a return payment is sent . If a student owes more $20.00, the student will be given a peanut butter sandwich and milk. The family account will be charged $0.50. It is important to make a payment as soon as possible or call the Food Service office [839-6056] to make payment arrangements. A blue-printed payment envelope for lunch/breakfast is included with this mailing. Payment envelopes are collected form the school offices daily and office personnel will enter the payments into the family’s account. Lunch/breakfast payment envelopes can be dropped off at any school office or mailed to: Food Service Department; 1903 Bartlett Avenue; Altoona, WI 54720. Altoona also has an e-pay program in which payments can be made.

Free/Reduced Lunch:

NSL applications must be submitted every year in order for a household to qualify for free or reduced meals (includes breakfast and lunch). The approved households will also qualify for free morning milk. Your household’s status for free/reduced meals for your children from last year carries over into the new year for 30 days. After 30 days, if no application has been filed, your children will be charged full price meals and morning milk. Please call the Food Service office [839-6056] with any questions.

All menus are subject to change due to availability.
Note: In order to reduce the total fat content of meals, some meat entrees may contain poultry or soy.
