What is School Counseling?

School counselors are education professionals trained to use their understanding of child development, mental health, and learning to remove barriers to student’s success.  School counselors deliver comprehensive programs that teach skills and behaviors needed for all students to be academically successful and ready for their future.  They collaborate with families and school staff to proactively support students and provide interventions when students need additional support to reach their full potential.

School counseling programming is aligned to our professional standards, the ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success.  Like other mental health professionals, school counselors abide by a code of ethics in addition to following district policy, FERPA, and other state and national law.
