School District of Altoona
Engage. Equip. Empower.
The School District of Altoona is a special place. We are a growing community that is able to provide many of the opportunities of a large school district, while tailoring the educational experience to meet the needs of all of our students. We live by three words here: Engage - Equip - Empower. These words drive our work to continuously improve to do more for our students and the community we serve. Our teachers, staff, and administrators work hard to innovate, yet still hold on to the traditions that make us uniquely Altoona. Additionally, we are proud to boast our genuine partnership with the City of Altoona to launch all of us to the next level of educational excellence. Best yet, our values and investments into our students have proven to be working as we have seen achievement scores rank among the best in West-Central Wisconsin. There is no better place to learn, work, or grow than Railroader Nation and I am proud to be a part of this small moment in Altoona’s history.
Dan Peggs, Superintendent
About our community:
Altoona is located in west central Wisconsin in the heart of the Chippewa Valley. Contiguous to Eau Claire, Altoona is a community of 7,200 residents and home to about 581 businesses. The Altoona school district serves a student population of just over 1,600 students and covers just 14.79 square miles.
The school district includes the City of Altoona, a portion of the Town of Washington and to a much smaller extent the Town of Lincoln and City of Eau Claire. The district extends six miles to the east, south to highway AA, southwest to Otter Creek. The northern border is Lake Altoona. Fairfax Avenue is the district's western limit.
Three of the district's four schools, Altoona Intermediate School (4-5), Altoona Middle School (6-8), and Altoona High School (9-12) are conveniently located on one site. The fourth school, a state of art elementary school was built and opened to our K-3 student population in the 2016/17 school year. Altoona Elementary School, which is located just two miles east at 157 Bartlett Avenue, replaced Pedersen Elementary School.
